Microsofts update to Active Content in IE Part III

So what can I say? I just can't leave this alone :) I began implementing the Adobe solution into the site today as the top menu was getting pretty irratating with the "You must click to activate" message when I decided to make my own modification of it. I've been an avid user of the much fabled "Satay Method" since the first time I read about it. I decided that it would be nice if the JS file I was going to implement would output Satay compatible XHTML instead of the standard HTML that the Adobe file generated.

This turned out to be quite simple so the next step was to get it to show alternative content incase the user doesnt have the Flash plugin installed and activated. Having achieved all my goals I proudly present the final javascript file.

You can see how its implemented by viewing the source code of this page. The main differences from the original version are:

  • Implements "Satay Method" style output
  • Reformated (because im fussy)
  • Removed "embed" related code
  • If you want a clsid then just pass it in as like the other params, personally i dont use it
  • Pass in alternative content with the "altcontent" parameter, you can see that on this page I pass in a div with a bunch of menu links
  • Pass in "type" as a parameter instead of hardcoding it into the JS file
