Stroke My Wookie
For 10 great years, I led Stroke My Wookie which was one of the most popular game guilds in Star Wars: The Old Republic. We ran thousands of events for guild members and the wider server community to help people enjoy themselves while making new friends. We hosted over 60 progression raid teams to take down the toughest bosses and we dominated the weekly conquest system. Victory and success went hand in hand as we broke several world records along the way. It was an incredible community to be part of ❤️❤️❤️

There was a lot of web development work required to support the guild. The website ran on the Shivtr guild hosting platform where I could select from several predefined themes and then override the stylesheet. Over the years, I made extensive use of that feature to create a series of responsive child themes which were unique to our guild brand. The admin drag-n-drop UI let me create page templates using predefined blocks like the Event Calendar, News and Forum which was great for basic functionality and then I added more advanced features using the iFrame block to point at content I hosted on a subdomain.
I created several Laravel applications for the website such as the Class Master Score Board which guild members could use to submit details about their best damage, healing and tank stats. These were then automatically displayed in multiple ranking tables on the frontend. We gave rewards for the best scorers and other guild members could improve their own skills by reviewing their combat logs and discussing them in the forum.
As the guild leader, I directed the guild’s overall strategy and drive but I had an ever expanding group of excellent officers who supported me. In the beginning, I tried to do everything myself and I learned the hard way about how important it was to delegate which opened so many opportunities. I didn’t need to be the best at everything if I could find people who were the best to work with me, so I kept constant watch for highly skilled people who had a natural affinity to help others and asked them to join me. The positivity, skill and wide range of activities led to a regular flow of new recruits joining our long term members so we were always active and growing.
It’s just a game but it’s a game where I learned important lessons, made great memories, life long friends and I met my wife. ❤️
